On April 30th, the Tacony Community Development Corporation partnered with the Tacony Historical Society to discuss the Disston Saw Works at the Northeast Philadelphia History Fair. This is an annual event that brings together more than 30 local historical societies, historical organizations, historic sites, museums, authors and others.
This year, the fair featured two presentations. Louis Iatorola, from the Tacony Historical Society, and our own Amarynth Ruch from the TCDC presented “Disston Saw Works: Past and Present.” Lou provided a fascinating deep dive into the history of the Disston Saw Works and how it contributed to the foundation of the Tacony neighborhood, while Amarynth followed up with an overview of the TCDC’s successful efforts to have the Disston-Tacony Industrial Waterfront District designated as an Historic District by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Following their talk, John H. Hepp IV, Professor of History at Wilkes University, presented “You Can’t Get to Heaven on the Frankford El: A Centennial History of the Frankford Elevated.”
