The Tacony CDC hosted some exciting events this October, including the final Third Thursday of the season and some great Halloween and Fall-Themed activities! We're so grateful for the supportive community of Tacony and all of the fantastic neighbors who come out to celebrate food, art, music, and friends with us. The TCDC is always looking forward to the next big thing -stay tuned for more announcements, and for now we'll see you at the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center's First Friday on November 3rd!
This year, we tried something new with a monthly outdoor event on Torresdale Avenue. Beginning in April, we've seen bands, groups, and solo acts performing live music in Tacony on a monthly basis, accompanied by food trucks from around the city (with cuisine from around the world!) and vendors selling incredible handmade wares. Most recently, Tacony had the pleasure of seeing Rust Dust, Animal Theater, and Revertexfacing perform on October 19th. But we've also welcomed acts including Patrice and the Show, G. T. Arpe, The McCullough Duo, Yeet!, Free Range Folk, and Noggin Hill. We've had so much fun hosting these events and can't wait to start planning for next year!
Tacony is well-known for our awesome annual Halloween Celebration, and as usual we made sure to include a costume contest! This year, participants walked the red carpet to face our special judges: Gaston Santos from the Free Library of Philadelphia, Pastor Evelyn Barnes from the Tacony Baptist Church and the Tacony CDC Board, Rachel Shaw from the Tacony CDC Board, and State Representative Joe Hohenstein. Spooky creatures, beautiful princesses, cute characters, and more graced us with their presence at the Tacony Library. Then, the whole menagerie cavorted down Torresdale Avenue to the Halloween Carnival; featuring carnival games, food from Philly Faves Food Cart, crafts hosted by the Tacony LAB, Trick-or-Treating, and more! Meanwhile, Tacony's teens enjoyed an awesome dance party at the Tacony Library.
All season long, we've been partnering with the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center to put on fall-themed events throughout the neighborhood. Attendees have been slowly filling up their punch-cards throughout October, and it finally paid off! More than 150 prizes were handed out to participants, and the carnival saw more than 300 children and families passing through. With a great staff and several volunteers, the community really came together to pull it off this year!
The next Tacony event is this Friday, November 3rd at the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center. This month's will feature an exhibition displaying the beautiful fiber arts of the LAB's weaving, sewing, knitting, crocheting, coiling, felting, rug making and embroidery students! Thanks to Third Thursdays and the work of the LAB, we've recently become aware of all of the incredible fiber artists in Tacony. Now it's time to support them!
