For this first time since 2019, the Tacony community got to go all out for the Tacony Halloween Celebration and Harvest Fest! The event was jam-packed with activities for kids and adults, from a Haunted Basement at the Tacony Library, to a Trunk or Treat decorating contest. The Tacony Community Development Corporation was so excited to put on this event along with the help of the Tacony Library, the Tacony Civic Association, the Tacony LAB, Read by 4th, Turning Points for Children, the Philadelphia Police, Victory Outreach Church, State Representative Joe Hohenstein, and Councilmember Mike Driscoll.

The evening began with the Haunted Basement, featuring student volunteers from Hamilton Disston School and a slime-making activity from the Tacony Library! While participants were lining up for the Haunted Basement, others found the craft center in the children’s room of the Library, where they made haunted houses, bracelets, and more. We had a fantastic team of teen volunteers and Library employees assisting with crafts!
Events on stage began with remarks from Representative Joe Hohenstein and Councilmember Mike Driscoll, before moving on to the Costume Contest hosted by Amarynth Ruch. The Costume Contest was judged by special guests Representative Joe Hohenstein; Gaspar Santos, Free Library Community Initiatives Specialist; and Ester Roche-Curet, Hamilton Disston Community Schools Coordinator. There were so many fantastic costumes, the judges really had their work cut out for them! After the Costume Contest, Urban Movement Arts’ Spirit Dancers wowed the crowd with an incredible (and spooky!) performance.
As the evening continued, the focus moved to Torresdale Avenue, where the Trunk or Treating was set up along the 6800 block. The kids had a blast gathering candy from neighbors’ cars, and the Tacony Civic Association walked up and down to choose three Trunk or Treat Decorating winners! In front of the library was a S’more and Hot Chocolate station with real firepits, as well as pumpkin painting from Turning Points for Children and crafts from the Tacony LAB. In addition to the Costume Contest and the Trunk or Treat Decorating Contest, the Tacony CDC, Tacony Library, and Tacony Civic Association sponsored a porch decorating contest! Our adult winners who did not yet receive a prize will be contacted to claim their ShopRite gift cards.
All in all, at least 800 neighbors, friends, and community members came out to celebrate with us. We hope that everyone had a fantastic time; every event where the entire Tacony community gets together for one big celebration is an incredible experience!
