On Saturday November 30th, our Executive Director, Xhulio, and Corridor Manager, Amarynth presented a tour of Tacony to nine members of the Disston family! The Tacony CDC was able to do this in partnership with the Historical Society of Tacony and the help offered by Craig and Susan Disston to bring together the Disston family members for this tour.
The historic tour was written by both president of the Historical Society of Tacony, Louis Iatarola Jr., and Amarynth. The tour was focused on historic buildings and sites including the Tacony Library, the Mary Disston and Hamilton Disston Schools, the Grindstone Church, Disston Park, and Frank Shuman's Inventor's Complex. The tour included a display of artifacts and records from the Disston Saw Works which was also curated by Louis Iatarola Jr..
Each of the Disston family members brought home a keepsake with them from the tour, including an historic photo of the Tacony Library and postcards featuring historical images of Tacony created in collaboration with the Mural Arts Tacony LAB Community Arts Center.
We would like to give a special thanks to the staff at the Tacony Library for allowing the family to come inside and view the mural "Diligence" by the artist Benjamin Volta, which depicts the saw making process.
We look forward to hosting more tours of Tacony in the future that will be open to the public!
