Attention art lovers of Tacony! The Tacony Community Development Corporation is working with artist Mat Tomeszko to create a community Still Life Project inspired by the stories of Tacony. This Spring, we've been collecting stories about the neighborhood and what it means to Tacony's residents and visitors. These stories will be turned into series of temporarily installed murals at multiple locations along Torresdale Avenue, with three large, central compositions containing all the objects from our stories in a classical arrangement, as well as several small, individual objects installed throughout the community. If you've answered any of our questions at in-person events or on Facebook, then you've already been a part of the public art design process in Tacony! But if you'd like to do more, we have the first of a series of Community Paint sessions coming up on March 23rd from 1-3 PM at the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center (6918 Torresdale).
Still Life is a genre of art that typically depicts ordinary objects from everyday life. A typical Still Life is a painting with a bunch of objects on a table. It often is made to look as if this is what someone might see
if they just happened to walk in the room. It is deceptive in its simplicity, because by recording these objects in paint, over time it becomes a record of history, and speaks volumes about individuals and a community. It elevates the everyday into the realm of art. Still Life can capture the character of someone by showing the environment they create for themselves. It can be like a portrait conveyed only by carefully chosen things.
Throughout this Spring and Summer, we'll be hosting more Community Paint events at various locations throughout Tacony. Keep an eye on our blog and social media to find out when and where the next event will be and to make your mark on Tacony! These events will culminate in a big celebration of the new artwork this Fall, we hope to see you there and to see our neighbors and visitors exploring the neighborhood and discovering our stories.
